By now most of us have painfully watched the video of PSG and Brazilian superstar Neymar hobbling off the field after sustaining what is being reported as a 5th metatarsal fracture of the right foot.
You might be wondering, “How bad is this injury, and how can it be fixed?”.
Well, this is a relatively common injury seen by foot and ankle specialists and could result from over use, twisting of the foot or repetitive trauma. And, depending on the exact location of the fracture, the treatment can range from conservative treatment to surgical intervention.
Based on the information released, it sounds like Neymar might have a form of a 5th metatarsal fracture known as a Jones fracture. Some of the symptoms of this fracture include pain, bruising, inability to bear weight, and tenderness to the outside of the foot. The first step of treatment would be to order X-rays and additional imaging may be necessary for surgical planning. In this type of injury we routinely would use screws, plates or a combination of both to maintain proper anatomic alignment during the healing process. Bone stimulation therapy may also be incorporated, as healing may be problematic with this type of injury .
All of the patients that I have treated with this type of injury were able to weight bear 6-8 weeks after surgery.
The incidence of re-injury with this type of fracture is very high, and there is a high likelihood that Neymar might be out for the season, although he should be ready in time for the COPA America matches in the summer. Several athletes have suffered similar 5th metatarsal fractures including NBA players Kevin Durant, Zhaire Smith and Ben Simmons, and NFL players Julio Jones and Dez Bryant. Allowing time for the fracture to sufficiently heal is of utmost importance.
