Why is a foot doctor putting a Q-Tip in my mouth? The benefits of pharmacogenetic testing and podiatric surgery!

At Barking Dogs Foot and Ankle Care, a common medication we use postoperatively is a narcotic or an NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs).  Foot and Ankle Surgery can cause discomfort, there is no way of avoiding that.  Surgery is controlled trauma to correct a problem.  In the surgeries we perform, the postoperative plan includes rest, ice, elevation and pain medications.  I always say to my patients: Don’t be a hero.  After surgery, pain medication can control your pain and help you with your recovery!

But everybody is different!  Have you ever taken a medication and felt like it didn’t work or you weren’t getting the effect you wanted?  It could be due to something called a “genetic opioid metabolic defect.”  We have employed pharmacogenetic testing in our office preoperatively to ensure that your medications will work effectively to ensure comfort postoperatively.

By taking a swab of your mouth in the office, we can test which pain medications you can absorb and provide an effective dose.

Why take the extra step, Dr. Pagano?  Because at midnight after your surgery, I don’t want you to find out that your pain medication doesn’t work.  Unfortunately, I have had these experiences.  When you (my wonderful patient) decide to undergo surgery, it’s more than just the surgery; it’s the recovery, too!  It’s my job to do everything I can to make your surgery a success.

Thinking about surgery? Want a second opinion?  I would love to help you with your decision.  Call and make an appointment at 484.681.9485 or visit us online at www.barkingdogspodiatry.com
